Mr Leo is back. After eighteen months of near-total silence — no features, no shows, no socials — the Bafoussam-born singer has dropped a new single that is being hailed by critics and peers as the most personal record of his career.
The song, simply titled "On Y Va" ("Let's Go"), is a five-minute slow-build ballad that opens on solo acoustic guitar and ends with a 14-piece choir. Lyrically, it is a quiet reckoning — with grief, with the music industry, and with what Mr Leo describes as "the version of myself I almost lost".
Why The Silence
In a written statement released alongside the single, Mr Leo confirmed for the first time that the past eighteen months were spent recovering from a period of severe burnout, including a hospitalisation in late 2023. He thanked his family, his medical team, and a small circle of Cameroonian artists — Salatiel, Locko and Charlotte Dipanda, named publicly — for "carrying me when I could not carry myself".
"I almost quit music at 24. I almost quit again at 31. I am 33 now and I am here, with this song, because Cameroon was patient with me. Thank you."
What The Critics Are Saying
Early reviews from across francophone Africa are overwhelming. One Abidjan-based critic called it "the most honest African R&B record since Asa's first album". A Lagos producer with two Grammy nominations posted simply: "This is how you come back."
